6” Diameter x 33-1/2" Length Steel Chisel Bit for Cable Tool
For cable tool drilling 6" diameter holes in clay and other geological formations. 2-1/4" x 3-1/4" male thread.
Around 33-1/2" length.
A regular bit, from a worm's eye view, looks like an H with the sides bent in a circle.
This gives star bits four cutting edges rather than the two on a regular bit, though they are smaller.
The design of a star bit helps it drill straighter in slanted formations.
For extreme conditions, manufacturers can also twist star bits just like regular bits.
Again, we would want a right-hand twist to use with left-lay drilling line.
Star bits, despite their construction, weigh just about the same as a regular drill bit of the same length.
Distance across the four wings is just about the same as the body diameter of a regular bit.
Although a special purpose bit, drillers could use it every day in some geologies and conditions.
Presumably American manufactured with carbon and/or alloy steels, but unsure if this is Acme, Spang, Gill Rock Drill, Ideco, Trident, Rampp, O.W.S. Co., Keystone or maybe another historical tooling manufacturer.
If you require thread protector(s) on tool joint(s) add another $15.
